Unemployment claims fall
WASHINGTON —In the week ending June 27, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial unemployment claims was 614,000, a decrease of 16,000 from the previous week's revised figure.

NAFTA numbers continue slide
WASHINGTON —Trade using surface transportation between the United States and its North American Free Trade Agreement partners Canada and Mexico was 33.1 percent lower in April 2009 than in April 2008, the fourth consecutive month with a yearly decline of greater than 27 percent.

Barbour comments on budget
JACKSON —Gov. Haley Barbour said the new state budget is prudent and balanced, and in a statement thanked lawmakers for their hard work, but also added that other issues are unresolved and that he is concerned about the amount of federal stimulus money in the budget.

Construction spending still slumping
WASHINGTON —While non-residential construction spending increased in May compared to the prior month, total construction spending was down 0.9 percent compared to April and was 11.6 percent lower than levels in May 2008.
