  1. Open letter to Governor Phil Bryant

Large portions of the people of Mississippi deserve to have your respect in the case of the Confederate flag. This most important matter does not need to linger any longer. It needs your immediate attention to make it possible for this matter to be voted on as soon as possible. Waiting until the regular session to take up this matter will continue to cause divisiveness.

People from around the world come to stay at my small bed and breakfast in Jackson. They ask me why that flag flies in Mississippi. It is hard to have to tell them some people just do not care about the hurtful feelings of African Americans in our state.

My Jackson inn is near Poindexter Park west of downtown. When my guests ask about the flag and similar issues I have to remind them that when I was in my youth singer Dorothy Moore and I could not even be friends. She could not come and swing in this park like I did. That it was wrong to not let all children use our public park. That was and is one of numerous injustices and insults suffered by African Americans. I tell them the use of the Confederate flag as part of the state flag is one of the continuing silent wounds.

I implore you to call a special session to give the legislators an opportunity to correct this inappropriate and damaging image of Mississippi on the state flag. The quicker you act to fix this blight on the state of Mississippi the better. More people will come to our state, and even some will decide to stay here. More people will do business with our state. It will also send a significant message to many citizens of our state that you care about them.

    Sincerely,

    Marcia Weaver
    Mississippi Resident
