The new smash hit Avatar is No. 1 at the box office this week.
Amazingly enough, however, two of the top three and three of the top six movies still have strong Mississippi connections.
At No. 2 is The Princess and the Frog. One of the main characters uses the voice of a Jackson girl, Elizabeth Dampier. This isn’t the first professional work for the St. Richard Catholic School student. However, this is her biggest work to this point. We can only hope this is the tip of the iceberg for her.
The Princess and the Frog made more than $12 million last week.
At No. 3 and still chugging along is The Blind Side. The story of former Ole Miss offensive lineman and current Baltimore Raven left tackle Michael Oher has become an international sensation. It is truly inspirational.
It made more than $10 million last week.
At No. 6 is Invictus with Mississippi’s Morgan Freeman, who plays South African president Nelson Mandela.
Freeman, already with an Academy Award to his credit, is getting that Oscar buzz again for this movie with Matt Damon that is labeled as one of the most inspirational films of the decade.
Invictus made more than $4 million last week.
But Avatar, with more than $77 million in box office sales, is the new heavyweight champ.
Avatar, according to reviews, takes us to a spectacular world beyond imagination, where the hero fights to save the alien world he has learned to call home. Sounds like a great action thilller.
Regardless of your choice, if you want to see a movie during the holidays, it appears there will be a good one to check out.

Avatar is a great movie experience. Note: I said experience, not movie. The plot was a bit thin and rehashed, but the actual 3d feel and beauty of the world definately makes up for it. Can’t wait to see what James Cameron will come up with next!

Story - Main character, Jake, infiltrates a tribe of aliens on some planet. This tribe resides on the source of some highly expensive mineral. The tribe must be wiped out because of it. Jake starts to like his new friends, because they seem to be cool and in harmony with their nature. He also fell in love with female alien, Nscho-tschi, er… Neytiri. Battle between humans and aliens. The end. — Well, not only has been this around thousand times over and over again, but it (go figure!) might have taken some bits from the history as well. Dances with Wolves have been mentioned in some reviews and I can think of even more accurate example - Enemy Mine (1985). Wiping the native Americans was a damn shame from any angle, but please, we all have got the point that it was wrong, OK? Get over it and don’t breed the hate among the dumb mooing cattle. If you need some movie history lesson from this area, go see the Little Big Man (1970), the plot is exactly the same, only you won’t need the 3D goggles.

I saw this epic last night at the Empire Leicester Sq in London, which is a superb venue in which to view this film. Huge screen, excellent sound and an extraordinary Dolby, 3 dimensional image. The whole effect is mind blowing. This is a ‘Must see’ movie, innovative, and extraordinary. I think it will be regarded by most cinema goers as another milestone in the history of the art. The level of realism achieved is remarkable, and although the film is relatively long in real time, it retains it’s excitement and holds the audience’s attention to the end. Performances are good, but this is not the sort of film that dwells on big star value for the actors, although Sigorney Weaver does shine and delivers a very convincing performance, as do the rest of the cast. But as there is so much entertainment and action value on screen the human element does not dominate in the usual way. As Writer/Director, James Cameron deserves high praise for this creation and in my opinion it will break box office records. I thoroughly enjoyed this film.
