Winter weather expected this morning in Delta

MISSISSIPPI DELTA — The National Weather Service has issued a winter weather advisory for three Delta counties that runs through noon today. Billy Barber named Leland police chief

Billy Barber, who has spent the past 15 years with the Washington County Sheriff’s Department, is the new police chief in Leland. Barber got his start in law enforcement in 1990 with the Leland Police Department, where he worked as both a criminal investigator and narcotic investigator. Eight years later, he joined the Washington County Sheriff’s Department.

Eight counties report damage from storm system

ACROSS MISSISSIPPI — The Mississippi Emergency Management Agency has received reports of damage from eight counties as a result of severe weather that moved through the state yesterday. Contract awarded to demolish flood-damaged homes on lake

GREENVILLE — The Washington County Board of Supervisors has awarded a contract for $33,455 to demolish five Lake Ferguson houses acquired this summer. Deer Creek restocked with fish

LELAND — State wildlife officials have restocked Deer Creek near Leland with bluegill fish. Leland Mayor James Lowe says the creek’s fish population had dwindled during the summer when the creek reached near record low levels. Pippins named warden

Mary L. Pippins has been appointed warden of the regional jail in Washington County. Pippins takes over from sheriff’s department Maj. Percy Miles, who was named interim warden in September.
