No easy answers to gaming questions

As I See It

The national commission studying gambling`s effects on society visited the Mississippi Gulf Coast a couple of weeks ago. In light of that visit, let`s reflect on the nature of gaming`s impact on our state and the local communities where it is legal.

Some say that it causes increased crime and mortgage foreclosures. Some, including many conservative religious groups, say that gambling is sinful and it should be opposed for that reason. Defenders include politicians and economic developers in the communities where casino gaming is present and has become a major player in the local economy.
