Hol-Mac Corporation is founder’s vision come true

Bay Springs — Hol-Mac Corporation, founded in 1963 with two employees and one small building, has grown to more than 300 craftsmen and professionals working in four facilities with some 400,000 square feet of dedicated manufacturing space.

When Charles Holder started the company, it was called Southern Welding and Machine and provided welding and machine shop services to local oil field, timber, construction and farming industries.

Today, 42 years later, Holder’s vision of becoming a world-class manufacturer has come true and the company is continuing to grow.

“Our hydraulic tank facility in Winona is doing so well that it’s being expanded from 90,000 square feet to 120,000 square feet,” according to Jamie Holder, the president. Charles Holder is his father. “My father is still active in the business and these days he concentrates on engineering and training.”

In addition to the hydraulic tank plant, Hol-Mac has three other facilities (all in Bay Springs): steel fabrication, hydraulic cylinders and heavy fabrication. With the exception of the heavy fabrication facility, the plants serve original equipment manufacturers

The heavy fabrication plant makes proprietary finished products designed by Hol-Mac, and these can be seen in cities across Mississippi. Under the brand name Pac-Mac, they include garbage trucks, compactors and vehicles for picking up limbs and “white” items, such as refrigerators.

McComb, Horn Lake, Gulfport, Biloxi, Clarksdale and Southaven use Pac-Mac refuse pickup and compacting vehicles. So do a number of counties out of state, Holder said, Pac-Mac ships as far north as Virginia and as far west as Texas, Oklahoma, Utah and New Mexico. Pac-Mac vehicles are also used in Puerto Rico.

Another of Hol-Mac’s facilities specializes in cylinders. Hol-Mac entered the cylinder market in the late 1960s. In 1970, there was a modest expansion and, by 1982, “We recognized the need for a new, modern facility dedicated solely to the production of hydraulic and pneumatic cylinders.”

The resulting facility, with some 120,000 square feet, specializes in custom cylinders. “At Hol-Mac, there’s no such thing as a ‘stock’ or ‘shelf’ cylinder. We believe that a cylinder should be designed and built for its specified use to guarantee the fullest potential performance and economy for a customer’s equipment.”

In addition to hydraulic and pneumatic cylinders, the facility manufacturers rotary, manifolds (swivel), bore sizes up to 12 inches, accumulators and tensioners
Mississippi customers include Clarksdale’s KBH and Wicker Machine. Out of state, Hol-Mac has such cylinder customers as Miller Industries and Kubota.

Hol-Mac’s BenchMark Tank product line resulted from the company’s experience in steel fabrication and hydraulic cylinders.

“Your hydraulic fluid is only as clean as the tank that you put it into. BenchMark Tanks’ manufacturing process guarantees that our tanks are cleaned to the customer’s requested ISO cleanliness level before the first drop of oil goes in.”

Clean hydraulic fluid reduces downtime, requires fewer component replacement parts, results in lower maintenance costs and provides an increase in profit margin.

BenchMark Tanks are individually tested for leaks and defects prior to leaving the manufacturing plant. A line of standard tanks made of rugged 12-inch materials, as well as custom-built tanks that are made with material specified by the customer, are also available.

The working materials at the BenchMark facility include aluminum, steel and stainless steel. By using both tanks and cylinders, contamination issues can be tracked down and eliminated faster.

“Our seven-step BenchMark process is the outcome of our pursuit to build the cleanest reservoir on the market today.”

Among Mississippi customers for BenchMark tanks are KBH and Taylor Manufacturing. Out of state, such industries as Komatsu and Galbreath use BenchMark Tanks.

In its fabrication facility, Hol-Mac offers over 40 years of processing performance as a major supplier of welded steel fabrication, contract machining and assembly services to major original equipment manufacturers.

Hol-Mac provides a broad range of metalworking and machining services, from burning to shape to turnkey production and manufacturers to a customer’s prints or its engineering team is available to help with design or to improve a product. This saves customers money and improves quality.

Holder said that there are few Mississippi customers for these fabricated products but that “Out of state we sell to Komatasu, Miller Industries, Caterpillar, Rotary Lifts and Mitsubishi.”

Over the years, Hol-Mac has developed value-added and contract manufacturing and developed a niché in the industrial market by combining its expertise and products in steel fabrication, cylinders and hydraulic tanks to better serve original equipment manufacturers.

Typical of Hol-Mac’s value-added process is the development of complete kits, which include packaging all of the components for a particular machine. Hol-Mac also provides complete turnkey operations, which include product design, tooling design and manufacturing. These turnkey operations can be as a whole unit or an attachment delivered to a customer as a finished product.

  1. I have a front loader that has Hol-Mac hyd cylinders that need repair but the wire clip that holds them together inside the tube is broken off on three of them. Do you have any idea of how to get them out. Also do you have detailed drawings that i could get on them? They are 25h50666 clyinders. Please respond.
