Beach Boulevard reopens

BAY ST. LOUIS — A portion of Beach Boulevard in Bay St. Louis opened July 2, a milestone in the area’s recovery from Hurricane Katrina.

This first phase construction began at Ballentine Street and continues to the CSX railroad.

The project, which includes roadway reconstruction and utility installation, was awarded to Hemphill Construction Company Inc. of Florence for $5.97 million.

Work on the 1.2-mile stretch of roadway at Ballentine Street, continuing toward U.S. 90, started last year. URS Corporation of Jackson provided construction engineering and inspection on behalf of Mississippi Department of Transportation.

Phase two construction was scheduled to begin the week of July 6-12, starting from the CSX railroad and continuing northeast to U.S. 90. Access will be restricted to local traffic only during the next phase of traffic.

Katrina heavily damaged Beach Boulevard. Since that time the roadway has been open with a temporary limestone surfacing treatment while the City of Bay St. Louis has worked to do local utility and roadwork. The project is scheduled for completion in January 2010.
