Mississippi to receive $470K from Energy Dept.

JACKSON —  The U.S. Department of Energy says Mississippi will receive nearly $470,000 for state emergency preparedness planning and to ensure prompt recovery and restoration from energy supply disruptions.

The funds are part of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009. The money will be used to hire or retrain personnel and increase the state’s capability to address situations that may disrupt the electricity system, such as blackouts, hurricanes and ice storms.

The funding was announced Friday and Mississippi Development Authority Executive Director Gray Swoope says the funds will incorporate planning for smart grid and renewable energy technologies.
