Water breaks force EXPO postponement; Event has been rescheduled for April 7-8

For the first time in its 27-year history, the Mississippi Business & Technology EXPO, originally scheduled for Jan. 13-14, was postponed. Dozens of waterline breaks in Jackson prompted Gov. Haley Barbour to declare a state of emergency and forced the closing of facilities in the Capital City, including the EXPO’s venue, the Mississippi Trade Mart.

The 2010 EXPO, Mississippi’s largest business-to-business tradeshow, has been rescheduled for April 7-8 at the Mississippi Trade Mart.
“We deeply regret that we must postpone the 2010 EXPO,” said Alan Turner, publisher of the Mississippi Business Journal, which puts on the EXPO. “It was going to be an incredible and informative event. However, we will be unable to provide our attendees, vendors and caterers with the appropriate facilities to attend the event.”
“Now, we are looking forward to April,” Turner added. “The EXPO will be a first-class event as always.”
The arctic blast that gripped the state beginning Jan. 7 and continuing through the weekend devastated the City of Jackson’s water infrastructure. City officials said frozen pipes resulted in approximately 70 breaks in the system. Barbour issued his disaster declaration Jan. 11, shutting down all state facilities in Jackson and sending all state workers home. He subsequently extended the disaster declaration through Jan. 12, the day EXPO exhibitors were scheduled to begin setting up in the Mississippi Trade Mart.
Low water pressure causes health concerns as well as fire hazards. Numerous Jackson businesses, including the Mississippi Business Journal, were forced to close early Jan. 11 and remained “displaced” Jan. 12.
On Jan. 11, Jackson Mayor Harvey Johnson said the city was experiencing low water pressure due to “sub-freezing weather… it puts a stress on the system that it hasn’t seen since 1989.” We need water lines to be replaced, “but this incident is because of the freezing conditions…over the last week or so,” Johnson said in an interview with local television station WLBT.
At press time, city officials were unsure as to when the issue would be rectified. City workers had repaired many of the breaks, but concern was high that as temperatures continued to rise, lines would thaw, revealing more breaks.
While the dates have changed, the 2010 Mississippi Business & Technology EXPO will offer all events originally planned. The show will open Wednesday, April 7 with the Best Places to Work in Mississippi Kickoff Breakfast, recognizing those companies that offer outstanding workplaces and a commitment to their workers.
The exhibition floor will open with the conclusion of the breakfast. Dozens of exhibitors will be on hand promoting their products and services.
Also on April 7 will be the Top 40 Under 40 Luncheon, an awards program that honors Mississippi leaders under the age of 40 who have achieved business success while working to improve their communities.
Activities April 7 will conclude with Business After Hours, a networking event that will offer live music and food from area restaurants.
The 2010 EXPO will continue Thursday, April 8. The Business Woman of the Year Luncheon will be held, choosing from among the 50 Leading Business Women winners the “best of the class.”
