Small Business Spotlight: Morgan Sartain, Personal Trainer

Personal trainer finds niche with busy businessmen, housewives by going to them

Morgan Sartain, 28, has started a business designed to help clients get into shape without hitting the gym.

Her business isn’t built on a fad diet or some new-fangled workout equipment. It’s based on tried-and-true workout techniques: weight training and cardio workouts, but they’re done from the comfort of home.

“This is for the sedentary person or a stay-at-home mom with three kids,” she said.

She also offers her services for the busy executive who cannot find the time to fit in a trip to the gym.

“I’ll come into the office. We’ll find a place and get in a workout,” she said.

A certified fitness trainer, Sartain has been offering advice and helping workout partners in the gym for a decade, and only recently put that expertise to use in business.

Having worked out since she was a teen, she found that peers in the gym were often asking her for help with their workout goals.

“I found that I’m really good at it, and I’m a decent motivator because I’ve been doing it so long, and I know it works,” she said.

Staying in shape, as is the case for many, isn’t always easy.

“I met my husband and I found happiness, and with that happiness, I found some weight,” she said. “So, I’ve been there through the struggle to get it off, and I never gave up.”

That’s why her program isn’t a simple, quick solution.

“It’s also about taking care of your heart, so that when you’re 60 or 70 someone doesn’t have to take care of you…” she said. “My goal is to not have the same client for over a year, because if that happens, I haven’t done my job. The whole idea is to teach effective exercise and implement a positive lifestyle change.”

She met her husband while doing freelance work in Jackson. After the couple married and she moved from Atlanta to Jackson, she continued her corporate career.

It wasn’t long before her personal training work was taking more and more of her time.

“I just said, ‘Lord, if I’m not supposed to be doing this slam the door and if I am, open every door,’ and it’s all kind of been laid out for me,” she said. “So, I hear the message.”

A typical workout for her clients begins with an eight-minute warm-up session followed by exercises to work the major muscle groups, the smaller muscles and then finishes with a five-minute cool down and stretching period.

Some of her clients are husband-and-wife teams, so she’ll have the wife doing leg lifts while the husband does football drills.

“It’s a delicate balance because I found out quickly that men don’t like to do aerobics,” she said.

She noted that all workouts are catered to the individual’s fitness levels.

“This workout is so a man or woman can know they’re not going to be judged. I’m going to map out their goals and help them reach them,” she said. “I’m going to get you on your way and help you make that lifestyle change.”
