“It’s such a beautiful and picturesque course, what with Grenada Lake serving as the backdrop for so many holes,” said Sanford, The Dogwood’s director of golf. “Not only is the course always in great condition, but anyone who plays can expect to see a deer or two, and maybe a fox.”
The Dogwoods was voted as the state’s No. 3 favorite golf course to play by Mississippi Business Journal readers.
Billed as a “nature’s lover’s course,” The Dogwoods takes full advantage of the natural beauty surrounding Grenada Lake. Carved out of the Hugh White State Park forest, the course features undulating greens, wide fairways and a view that’s second to none.
“It’s a par-four with lots of bunkers,” he said. “The hole is driveable but it can eat your lunch.”
Sanford, a former journalist who earned his PGA card in 1995, says the credit for the success of The Dogwoods goes to course superintendent Charlie Krell and his staff.
“The condition of the course is what brings people to The Dogwoods,” Sanford said. “Charlie and his guys, none of whom play golf, take a lot of pride in keeping the course in tip-top shape. They care about people’s opinion of the golf course.”
Managed by the City of Grenada, the course has been a tremendous boost to the local economy. Out-of-state golfers from as far away as Oregon and Illinois spend money in Grenada hotels and restaurants during excursions to The Dogwoods.
“Having the course has been such a boon to the city,” Sanford said.
