No. 5: Tunica National, Tunica

Matt Cooper believes the main function of a golf course is that golfers have fun.

Now in his fourth year as director of marketing for Tunica National Golf & Tennis Club, Cooper was elated when informed Mississippi Business Journal readers voted the golf course as Mississippi’s fifth best.

“We are definitely thrilled with being mentioned with the best courses in the state,” said Cooper.  “Providing our visitors with a good time is our objective, whether it’s a tournament or regular play.  We try to accomplish that at Tunica National.”

Designed by Mark McCumber, Tunica’s public 18-hole course features Champion Bermuda greens, gently rolling fairways, tee boxes with six markers and generous landing areas.

“We pride ourselves on the condition of the golf course,” Cooper said.  “Jason Lloyd, our course superintendent, does a fantastic job.  It’s a fun layout, with tons of water and bunkers.  The course is quite challenging, however.”

Tunica National Golf Club also features golf carts complete with a GPS system that measures yardage and scoring, shows hole and green overviews, measures exact distancing to fairway hazards and landmarks and shows pin placement.

Cooper says that Tunica National has planted approximately 200 trees around the property the past two years that will make the course even more attractive to golfers.

In addition to local residents, the golf course draws a loyal clientele from St. Louis and Chicago.

“We offer some great ‘stay-and-play’ packages that bring a huge following to our course from out-of-state,” he said.

Another attraction is the close proximity to the Tunica casinos, added Cooper.

The club also boasts one of the best practice facilities in the state, including the Golf Academy, where Tunica National club pros offer personalized golf instruction for individuals or groups through clinics and private lessons.

The academy is open Monday through Saturday 9 a.m. until 5 p.m.
