The Oxford-based medical facility takes great pride in extolling their employees’ technical expertise and compassionate attitude. Baptist-North Mississippi management says their staff carries out “Christ’s three-fold ministry – healing, preaching and teaching” everyday in the hospital and its subsidiaries.
And those employees are rewarded with a compensation and benefits package that is second to one in the healthcare industry.
Perhaps that is why Baptist Memorial Hospital is one of the Mississippi Business Journal’s 2010 “Best Places to Work in Mississippi.”
Additionally, employees are encouraged to participate in various hospital special projects, including Code H, Patient Safety Round Table, Nursing Hourly Rounding and many other resources. They also work diligently to ensure employee engagement by working with employees to get their input at town hall meetings, employee opinion surveys and recognizing outstanding employees during various celebrations.
Those celebrations would include first 90 days of employment, yearly anniversary, service awards and quarterly celebrations for their specific departments.
Baptist Memorial Hospital employs over 1,000 and is the second-largest employer in Lafayette County with a $52.3-million payroll.
In 1989, Oxford-Lafayette County Medical Center became Baptist Memorial Hospital-North Mississippi. Through the years, Baptist has added additional services and witnessed tremendous growth. Three years later, the hospital doubled in size after completing a $29-million construction renovation project.
In 2000, Baptist HealthPlex opened a 15,000-square-foot center dedicated to fitness and health education. In the same year, Baptist-North Mississippi ranked among the nation’s top 100 orthopedic hospitals.
Baptist Centers for Cancer Care and Diagnostics Center opened a 42,000-square-foot facility in 2002 and a year later, the hospital completed a 100,000-square-foot expansion project and was rated in the top 5 percent in the nation for quality by the Joint Commission.
The hospital provides a wide range of services, including a Level 3 trauma facility, top-rated cardiology unit, surgery suites and services, inpatient and outpatient rehabilitative departments, sleep disorder center, critical care units, PET/MRI and other radiology services and women’s and nursery special services.
On an average day, the hospital performs 29 surgeries, 176 radiology procedures, 1,008 lab procedures, 2.7 births and dispenses 3,916 pharmacy doses.
In 2009, Baptist Memorial Hospital was recognized by an independent agency for its cardiac surgery unit and orthopedic offerings. The hospital also holds the distinction of opening the first sleep disorders center in north Mississippi accredited by the American Society of Sleep Medicine.
