Being part of the state’s only academic medical center means University Physicians at University of Mississippi Medical Center (UMMC) share a commitment to lead the way in medical innovation and quality of care.
University Physicians is Mississippi’s largest and most comprehensive multi-specialty practice and is a part of University of Mississippi Health Care, the patient care component for UMMC.
Doing what’s best for employees empowers them to do what’s best for patients, says Larry Bouchea, director of human resources.
“When we show we care for one another, we foster an environment of care that drives patient service,” he said. “Doing what’s right by employees is strong guiding point on on our business compass at University Physicians.”
The nationally recognized staff and more than 425 physicians find fulfillment in working collaboratively toward the goal of exceptional care, adds Scott Stringer, associate vice chancellor for clinical affairs and president of University Physicians.
“Our dedicated and enthusiastic employees embrace our mission to provide exceptional health care and understanding to our patients and their families,” he said. “Our employees get it…I speak for my faculty colleagues by saying that our employees are our partners.”
Approximately 600,000 patients are cared for annually by UP doctors and staff at multiple University locations, including the University Physicians Pavilion on the UMMC campus. The building offers 16 clinics for ease of multiple appointments and includes a full service lab, radiology services, pharmacy and physical therapy.
Also, cardiology testing and procedures such as bone marrow aspirations, lumbar punctures, endoscopy and minor surgery are performed in the Pavillion.
In summer 2010, UP will open a multi-specialty clinic in the Flowood-Grants Ferry area of Rankin County and will offer services from family medicine to gynecology to general surgery.
UP human resources specialist Melissa Melohn says she enjoys working for University Physicians.
“Here, we stress the little things…the importance of the human touch,” she said. “That’s why I love working at University Physicians, the human touch each patient and staff member receives.”
Benefits for UP employees are outstanding, adds Sherry Denny.
“The exceptional insurance and retirement benefits attracted me to come to work here,” said Denny, an administrative assistant. “But I have found that everyone here truly cares about their patients and co-workers.”
More than 100 UP physicians have been named Best Doctors in America in 2007, 2008 and 2009. UP’s partnership with University Hospitals contributed to UMMC being named a Thomson Top 100 Hospital in 2007.
