Occupational employment and wage estimates from the Mississippi Department of Employment Security for May 2009 show the highest-paying positions to be in management, while those in food preparation earn the lowest wages.
Figures available from MDES, according to information created by the Labor Market Information Department and the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, show the average salary for those in management positions to be $75,810.
Within the management category, chief executives are paid the most, with an average salary of $128,690. The lowest paid workers in the category are employment, recruitment and placement specialists whose salaries average $35,940.
The second-highest paying field is the legal profession, with the average salary among those in the field being $64,290. Lawyers’ salaries are the highest in the profession at $88,360.
In the healthcare field, practitioners and technical jobs have an average salary of $57,920.
Obstetricians and gynecologists make the most in the category with an average salary of $203,170. Surgeons and physicians are the second- and third-highest paid in the category with respective salaries of $192,890 and $192,980.
Healthcare support jobs pay an average of $21,150 with occupational therapist assistants earning the most at $44,670.
Education, social service
The state’s average salary among education, training and library jobs is $38,460. Postsecondary law teachers earn the most among this group with an annual salary of $92,390; postsecondary environmental science teachers come in second in this group with an average salary at $90,990.
Teacher assistants and library technicians are at the lower end of the category with respective annual salaries at $16,720 and $21,720.
For those in protective service jobs – a category that includes firefighters, patrol officers and security guards – the average salary is $28,030.
Supervisors and managers of police and detectives earn the most with an average salary of $49,860. Police and sheriff’s patrol officers earn just more than average for the category with salaries at $31,170. Detectives and criminal investigators make nearly as much as managers and supervisors with salaries at $47,080.
Farming, fishing and forestry
In the farming, fishing and forestry occupations category, the average salary is $26,280. The highest paid workers in the category are managers, who earn an average salary of $42,270, while the average agricultural worker earns an average salary of $16,990.
Architecture and engineering
Computer hardware engineers earn the most in the architecture and engineering job category, which has an average salary of $60,210. The average salary for computer hardware engineers is $86,040. Surveying and mapping technicians earn the least in the category with a $33,030 salary.
Financial, sales and office jobs
For business and financial operations occupations, the average salary is $50,710 with financial specialists topping the category with an annual salary of $67,100.
In sales and related jobs, the average salary is $26,870. Those in securities, commodities and financial services sales positions earn the most in the category with an average salary of $81,980.
Among arts, design, entertainment, sports and media jobs the average salary is $39,020. The highest paying job in the category is broadcast news analysts at $64,880.
The average salary is $28,090 among office and administrative support jobs. In this category, postal service clerks earn the most with a $51,820 salary.
Production, transportation, etc.
Production jobs have an average salary of $29,240. Power distributors and dispatchers earn the most with a salary of $72,280. For installation, maintenance and repair jobs, the average salary is $35,890.
The average salary among construction and extraction jobs is $33,190.
Transportation and material moving jobs have an average salary of $28,670. Airline pilots, copilots and flight engineers have the highest salary in the field ($87,630). Parking lot attendants earn the least with an average salary at $17,740.
Building and grounds cleaning and maintenance jobs have an average salary of $20,340 with supervisors and managers of housekeeping and janitorial workers earning the most at $37,260. Maids and housekeeping workers earn the least at $17,130.
The average salary is $18,130 for those in food preparation and serving-related jobs. Chefs and head cooks earn the most: $33,490. Non-restaurant food servers earn the least at $16,230.
