For more than 45 years, W. G. Yates & Sons Construction Company, based in Philadelphia, has been a leader in the construction industry. The company has built its reputation with a commitment to on-time construction, within budget and to the clients’ satisfaction. And while the company has grown continually since it was founded in 1963, it has always remained dedicated to that fundamental commitment.
Currently, the company has offices in seven southeastern states. Yet, the corporate office remains in Philadelphia, the same small town where the company was founded.
Yates Construction has handled a variety of jobs, including commercial and government, retail and entertainment, hospitality and leisure, healthcare facilities, gaming and entertainment, resort and hotel properties, industrial services, heavy services, education facilities and LEED-certified facilities.
One of the unique aspects of Yates Construction is that it has the ability to self-perform many of the tasks on a project. The company has experts in electrical, mechanical, concrete, asphalt, steel, drywall, site work, masonry, carpentry and exterior finishes. Because of handling so many aspects of the job, Yates has more control of the schedule, cost and quality for their clients. Although Yates subcontracts a significant portion of its work, this self-perform ability provides a level of expertise and value that’s hard to match.
“The thing that has kept us constantly competitive is our number one resource: our people,” said Jared Fuller, a spokesperson for W.G. Yates & Sons Construction. “The people we have working here have an extraordinary level of expertise. They are loyal employees who are focused on getting work and providing our clients with great service. That has really helped us to succeed during these tough economic times.”
Although the company is made up of thousands of employees, the commitment to the clients remains the same as it has for over 40 years.
Fuller said that the company has completed two major jobs recently, including multiple facilities at the Toyota plant in Blue Springs. Multiple buildings were also constructed at the Navy Construction and Battalion Command Base in Gulfport, a $100-million project that began in 2007 and was completed in May 2010.
Projects currently underway include: the Armed Forces Retirement Home in Gulfport, a $200-million project due for completion this year, the Jackson Federal Courthouse for the General Services Administration, a $130-million-plus contract; and, the Federal Bureau of Prisons facility in Yazoo City, a $175-million project.
Yates builds all over the United States and abroad, from California to Maine, as well as in Puerto Rico. Currently, the company has a project in Monterrey, Mexico. “We are constructing the United States Consulate building there,” said Fuller, who notes that there are special challenges with doing projects abroad. “There are both geographical challenges, as well as accessing resources. It’s a long way from any of our offices, but despite the challenges, our people always get in there and get the job done.”
There’s a reason Yates is consistently ranked in Engineering News Records List of Top Contractors. The firm continues to strive to deliver on time, within budget and to the clients’ satisfaction.
