DMR gives go-ahead to new Coast marina

WAVELAND — The Mississippi Department of Marine Resources has issued a permit for the city of Waveland to build a harbor/marina.

Mayor Tommy Longo says the city has applied for a permit with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers for final approval.

The city has applied for about $6 million in Community Development Block Grant funds for the marina project.

It will also use Tidelands Funds to subsidize the construction, which is planned to be done in phases.

Plans call for 68 boat slips, most of which would be floating docks.

Longo tells the Sea Coast Echo that the city needs to move forward with the project despite questions about the economy and the oil spill disaster.
