Soybean rust discovered, but no threat this year

ACROSS MISSISSIPPI — At this point in the 2010 season, soybean is no longer at risk from soybean rust, according to Tom Allen, Mississippi Delta Extension Plant Pathologist, Delta Research and Extension Center in Stoneville.

However, low levels of soybean rust were detected near Tylertown in Walthall County in commercial soybean fields.

“A fungicide application is not warranted for any soybean field in the entire state,” Allen said. “With continued dry conditions forecast throughout Mississippi it would require at least three to four weeks for the inoculum in a single field to build up to a threatening level and at that point almost all of the soybean fields in Mississippi will be harvested.”

In two of the fields where the disease was identified, single leaves were observed underneath trees with infected plant tissue. In the first field where rust was detected, three period-sized dots were identified with minimal sporulation. Soybean rust in all three fields was in the “tan stage,” suggesting that the fungus had not been present for much longer than two weeks.
