Oil, construction, lighting, electronics and cotton. These are the biggest industries in Mississippi for privately held companies, and you can read more about these across the nest several pages.

The Top 5 revenue-producing companies have been doing what they do for a long time, and it shows. The youngest company is No. 3, Howard Industries Inc., which is more than 40 years old. Like Howard, The Yates Companies Inc. at No. 2 was also founded in the 1960s. Both Staplcotn (No. 4), and Stuart C. Irby Co. (No. 5) began in the 1920s. And Ergon Inc., Mississippi’s No. 1 privately held company, began in 1954.
