Company working to revitalize Meridian

MERIDIAN — A Jackson economic development consulting agency has been hired by the city of Meridian to revitalize the downtown area.

Mayor Cheri Barry tells The Meridian Star that the city has hired Watkins Development, which rebuilt the King Edward Hotel in Jackson, to come with a plan to develop all of Meridian, including downtown, over the next 10 years.

She says Watkins also will look at developing the Threefoot building and the area around it.

The Threefoot Building is a 16-story Art Deco structure now listed as one of America’s Most Endangered Historic Places. It was built in the 1920s.

The city has received a $150,000 grant to study the Threefoot building.
