Vicki R. Slater, Attorney at Law

The dedicated work of Vicki Slater has been recognized with several outstanding awards. In 2008 she was named Consumer Advocate of the Year by the Mississippi Association for Justice (MAJ), the same professional organization that in 2009 presented her with awards for Woman Advocate of the Year and Trial Lawyer of the Year.

A graduate of the University of Southern Mississippi and a cum laude graduate of the Tulane University School of Law, she is licensed to practice in Louisiana and Mississippi. She is active in professional organizations and is currently vice president of the Mississippi Association for Justice, and serves on the faculty of Gerry Spence’s Trial Lawyers College, the Board of Governors and the National Finance Council of the American Association for Justice and the Women in the Profession Committee of the Mississippi State Bar Association.

Writing in Voir Dire, the MAJ quarterly magazine, Pam Johnson said, “Vicki has been a tireless advocate for her clients. She has been called upon by those in need – from the single mother with no resources to elected officials to even very successful lawyers in their own right – to take on the tough cases and fight for what’s right.

“She is a formidable and respected opponent in the courtroom and a vocal advocate for change, cooperation and accountability in the MAJ arena.”

A long-time member of MAJ, Slater was instrumental in founding the Women’s Caucus in 2002 and has supported the caucus by contributing to its events. She has also been involved with raising and contributing scholarship funds for women lawyers to attend association and state Bar functions.

As owner of Vicki R. Slater, Attorney at Law, she has reached a milestone in her career. “My career goal has been reached, which is to own my own firm,” she said, “and I want to encourage women to stay in the profession of law.”

One woman Slater definitely influenced is her daughter, Rhoda Holman, who followed her mother into the legal profession.

“My fantasy job would be to second chair my daughter in trials,” she said.

A native of Jackson, Slater says her commitment to excellence was instilled in her at an early age.

“I was taught that whatever I set out to do, I should do it right, do it well,” she said.
