No. 3: Timberton Golf Club, Hattiesburg

To those who know golf in Mississippi, the course at Timberton Golf Club might come as close as any to giving golfers the distinct feeling of being alone.

Like most Mark McCumber-designed tracks, the picturesque Hattiesburg golf course is a gentle haven of peace and tranquility.

Timberton owner and PGA Master Ron Hickman wouldn’t have it any other way.

He says the serenity of the course’s surroundings was by McCumber’s design and is what sets Timberton apart from other courses in the state. Both Golf Digest and Golfweek have recognized the course as one of the state’s top 10 since 1993.

“When Mark undertook designing the course, he did a great job of keeping it a golf course and not making it a golf resort,” said Hickman. “You barely see any residential structures as you play.”

Added Hickman: “It’s really special and an honor to be named as one of the top five courses in Mississippi. We get a lot of golfers from Jackson, Mobile and New Orleans who swing through while they’re on the road. I guess that’s why Hattiesburg is known as the ‘Hub City.’”

Timberton Golf Club moved up a spot from last year in the Mississippi Business Journal’s “Reader’s Choice: Mississippi’s Favorite Golf Courses.”

Boasting Hattiesburg and the surrounding area’s only 4.5 star-rated golf course, the track has a rich 21-year history of playing host to a variety of golf events, from PGA Tour Qualifying to the PGA CPC Southern Championship to seven Mississippi Golf Association state four-ball championships.

In 1998, Hickman and PGA past president James Ray Carpenter designed and added the nine-hole Lakeview course to Timberton.

Hickman credits the club’s success to a myriad of reasons, including attention to smallest of details.

“For two decades, everyone here has taken a lot of pride in the course and we’ve always invested back in our product,” he said. “Recently, we’ve built rebuild several bunkers and performed some drainage work. Right now, we’re changing mowing patterns with the grass to give it a different look.

“There’s a lot of pride at Timberton.”
