Hindsight is a funny thing.
We say it is 20/20.
In the present, however, we have the opportunity to look at a current project and know that 10 years down the line, observers are going to look back and say they consider The Art Garden at the Mississippi Museum of Art one of the biggest successes for Jackson in the last 25 years.
At the start, it was a parking lot, and as parking lots go, it was particularly ugly.
But with a little vision and a pile of hard work, museum director Betsy Bradley, her staff and dozens of volunteers made a dream a 1.2 acre reality in downtown Jackson.
When we look pack in 10 years, we will realize that The Art Garden became the cornerstone of a cultural district unifying the city’s most active cultural organizations: Thalia Mara Hall, the Arts Center of Mississippi, the Jackson Convention Complex, and the Mississippi Museum of Art, and that it brought people together like nothing Jackson had seen in more than 50 years.
It is more than garden rooms and a garden terrace and stage. It is more than a place for native plants and fountains for children to splash during the warm and hot months our Mississippi is so well known for.
It is a place for us to gather, like a great clearing in the woods where we find a little peace and tranquility during our otherwise hectic lives.
But we won’t mind shaking it to a little down-home blues every once in a while too.
