Any businesses out there looking for a creative Christmas card idea might want to follow Sheldon Laboratory Systems’ lead. The Crystal Springs-based company sends one of the most effective yet simple cards I’ve ever seen.
Every year, Sheldon employees “commission” their children to craft Christmas-related artwork. The company then uses the artwork to design its card. The artwork is labeled with the child’s name and age and the name of the Sheldon employee to whom they belong.
The card has a printed message. It follows the usual pattern — “Happy Holidays!” and “peace” and “joy.” But, the original artwork makes the card so much warmer, so much more personal. Every year I feel like those kids, who I obviously do not know, have done something special for me. And, I guess they have.
The cards are absolutely delightful, and they cannot be that difficult or expensive to produce.
Why do businesses send Christmas cards? Obviously, one reason is to simply spread good cheer. But, come on, at least the underlying motive is marketing. The cards help establish and/or solidify relationships. In that sense, it is as important for a business to craft an effective Christmas card as it is an attractive advertisement.
Whatever Sheldon’s motivation, the company’s card provides plenty of both cheer and great PR.
So, to this year’s wonderful Sheldon artists — Briana, A’Kenziah, Jamerson, Nicholas, Hannah, Madison, Kendal, Bailey, Michal, Cayden, Gracie, Cayman, Jasmine, Wilneisha, Tyquan and Ainsley — their families and all the folks at Sheldon, thank you so much for brightening the season for me.
