MTA program managing biomass/renewable energy council

RIDGELAND — The Mississippi Biomass and Renewable Energy Council (MBREC) is now under the management of the Strategic Biomass Solutions (SBS), a program of the Mississippi Technology Alliance. MBREC will be housed alongside SBS in Ridgeland.

“MBREC is on the move to bigger and better things,” said John Mabry Jr., president of MBREC. “We recognize that Mississippi has an abundant amount of raw materials in the biomass feedstock and technology arena.”

Created in 1998 and incorporated in 2000 as a nonprofit organization, MBREC members include representatives from agriculture, forestry, recycling, power generation, state and local government agencies, higher education, research, manufacturing and individuals interested in increasing economic opportunities for renewable energy in Mississippi.

“Our efforts will be focused on raising the awareness of MBREC around the state and help build a stronger membership base that encompasses interests in solar energy, biofuels, energy efficiency and beyond,” said Sumesh Arora, Ph.D., director of SBS.

MBREC will hold its annual meeting March 27 in Jackson at the law offices of Bradley Arant Boult Cummings, LLP. Nominees for officers and board of directors will be voted on at this time. The meeting is sponsored by BABC and SBS. There is no charge to attend and it is open to the public with a RSVP.

SBS is funded in part by the United States Department of Energy and managed by the Mississippi Technology Alliance. SBS is dedicated to helping commercialize renewable energy technologies by connecting entrepreneurs, investors and economic developers.
