SOUTHAVEN — The office of Mississippi Auditor Stacey Pickering is revising the amount that Southaven Mayor Greg Davis must repay to taxpayers after aldermen determined that about $6,000 in charges to the mayor’s city-issued credit card were not city-related expenses.
“We didn’t have enough documentation to justify approximately $6,000 as city expenses,” Aldermen Ronnie Hale said. “The charges we couldn’t justify were for a variety of items charged to the city credit card that is no longer being used by Mayor Davis.
The Commercial Appeal reported aldermen were given a March 30 deadline to review charges to Davis’ BancorpSouth credit card and decide whether the charges were personal or city business.
Davis has been under investigation by the state and FBI since late last year for questionable spending of city funds.
In November, Pickering’s office ordered Davis to repay more than $170,000 for expenses incurred on his personal credit card and reimbursed by the city. Davis supporters have repaid $96,000.
The state Auditor’s Office said Thursday that it has received the aldermen’s recent review of the city-issued credit card expenses and is working to revise the total amount that Davis has to repay.
Lisa Shoemaker, a spokeswoman for Pickering, said a new demand repayment amount will be issued against Davis, but she could not say how much Davis would be ordered to repay or when that new demand would be issued.
She said the Auditor’s Office had started weeks ago the process of recouping about $63,000 of what Davis still owes from his bonding company.
All elected officials are bonded against losses, and auditors could use Davis’ bond to get as much as $100,000. Aldermen and the city clerk also have bonds, for $50,000 each.
“I am not sure if the board will be held liable to repay any of the money for the city-issued credit card expenses we could not justify,” Hale said. “But if we are, we are prepared to divide it up among the seven aldermen and the city clerk.”
