Everyday Gardener great for giving and gardening

The entrance to the Everyday Gardener is always inviting and beautiful.

The Everyday Gardener in Fondren specializes in “the art of giving and gardening.” Whether you are looking for a gift for others or yourself, you are likely to find something among the store’s unique selection of home accents, vases, containers and works of art that will brighten a home or office. The business also carries a large selection of ferns, blooming plants and topiaries.

“We have a fashionable garden shop that is what we like to call part rustic and part elegant, or ‘rustic elegance’,” said Jan Wade, manager of The Everyday Gardener. “We have created at The Everyday Gardener an atmosphere that is inviting to all of the senses. We have beautiful flowers and potted plants in an array of colors and textures. We encourage our customers to make themselves at home and take in the scents of our beautiful candles and browse through our selection of unique gifts and home accessories.”

Wade said the forte at The Everyday Gardener is creating arrangements for customers that will bring beauty to their homes and a smile on the faces of their family and friends.

“We have unique containers and beautiful plants, and we enjoy creating arrangements that can be both whimsical and timeless,” she said. “We love going to different markets and finding artisan pieces in Mississippi as well as other parts of the country. We are fortunate to be able to sell Wolfe Birds. The Wolfe studio has for the past several years created a Mother’s Day Bird, unique to The Everyday Gardener. Only a certain number are created each year, so you really need to buy your Mother’s Day Bird early.”

Employee Janie Robbins said a hot trend in the community is the collecting of art by local artisans. In addition to Wolfe birds, they have bottle trees, birdhouses, paintings and Pearl River Glass. The latest additions to their art scene are one-of-a-kind ceramics by Mustard Seed.

Robbins said the Fondren location lends itself to a very eclectic clientele.

“We have students, neighbors, patients, and employees from the area,” Robbins said. “The merging of a fun-loving and talented group of employees, a wide variety of shoppers and a very exciting and unique inventory makes our store a special shopping experience.

“One of the coolest things about our store is the friendliness factor. If you don’t know us when you come in, you will before you leave. Our employees span the spectrum of age, interests, and hometowns, so it is not uncommon for casual conversation while browsing to turn to a lively chat of mutual friends.”

Springtime is its busiest season. It isn’t just the great weather that brings customers out, but many weddings and graduations.

“We sell lots of hostess gifts, all wrapped in our cute gift wrapping paper,” Wade said. “We also do a huge business during Mother’s Day. Thanksgiving and Christmas are also busy times for us.”

Research has shown that plants can be very healthy. They help purify the indoor air, and it turns out that gardening outside might very well be an anti-depressant. An article in Discover Magazine called “Is Dirt the New Prozac?” reported research that injections of soil bacteria produce serotonin — a compound known to elevate the mood — in mice.

“I can see how gardening can be good for the soul,” Wade said. “It is very intoxicating to be outside soaking up God’s gift of nature to us. There is great anticipation in watching herbs grow and then savoring the flavor in summer vegetables.”
