Hood: Ex-insurance agent gets jail time for fraud

MERIDIAN — A former insurance agent will spend time behind bars for fraud, according to Attorney General Jim Hood.

The Attorney General’s Office Elisa Odom, 45, of Bailey pleaded guilty in Lauderdale County Circuit Court before Judge Lester Williamson to five counts of mail fraud and four counts of false pretense. She was sentenced on count one (mail fraud) to five years in the custody of the Mississippi Department of Corrections with two years to serve, three suspended. She must also pay a $1,000 fine and $500 to the crime victim compensation fund plus court costs. She was sentenced on count two (false pretense) to nine years with MDOC, four years to serve, five suspended with five years supervised probation, to run concurrent to count one. She must also pay $41,000 in restitution to Colonial Life Insurance Company. On counts three thru nine (four mail fraud, three false pretense), Odom was sentenced to three years with MDOC, three years suspended and three years supervised probation to run concurrent with count two.

The sentence means Odom will serve four years in the custody of MDOC, followed by five years of supervised probation. She must also pay full restitution as well as fines and court costs.

At the time of the crimes, Odom was an agent for Colonial Insurance in the Meridian area.

“Our investigation showed this defendant fabricated insurance policies, using both real and fabricated names and addresses, in order to receive commissions from her employer,” said Hood.
