Rolls-Royce begins work on new jet engine test center at Stennis

Rolls-Royce broke ground Monday on a new $50 million jet engine test facility at the company’s outdoor testing site on the grounds of NASA’s John C. Stennis Space Center.

When fully operational, the coastal Mississippi facility is expected to create 35 skilled jobs.

James M. Guyette, chairman, president & CEO of Rolls-Royce North America, said the state-of-the-art test facility will help the company develop “the world’s cleanest and quietest engines.”

The Mississippi Development Authority (MDA) is helping to support construction and workforce training at the facility, though the press statement on the groundbreaking did not specify the amount of taxpayer money the MDA is contributing.

Hancock County is also providing support, though no details of the support were provided.

The new jet engine test facility is the company’s second outdoor jet engine test facility to be built-from-the-ground-up in the United States. It has been designed to support specialist engine testing and will be used to conduct research, development, crosswind, thrust reverse, cyclic and endurance tests on all Rolls-Royce Civil Aerospace engines.

The Rolls-Royce Outdoor Jet Engine Testing Facility at Stennis opened in October 2007. It is the exclusive outdoor test site for Rolls-Royce; one of only three of its kind in the world. Rolls-Royce employs nearly 150 people in Mississippi, 35 of whom are based in Stennis.
