Wireless technology 10 times faster with new 4G LTE

Wireless technology is getting faster for many Mississippians with the launching of the latest generation of wireless network technology by the area’s largest cellular providers. With the fourth generation (4G) Long Term Evolution (LTE) services introduced in the Jackson area by C Spire Wireless and AT&T, customers will experience the speed and advanced capabilities offered by this newest technology.

Both companies say the new 4G LTE technology is capable of delivering mobile services up to ten times faster than previously available. Users will be able to stay in touch with family and friends, download apps faster, open files almost instantly, do real-time video chat and stream movies, music and video much faster than before.

John Hopkins, regional manager of retail services for C Spire Wireless, says customers who visit or live near Jackson will have access to the nation’s only personalized 4G LTE network. “Our engineers and technical teams have been hard at work ensuring the network meets the highest standards for reliability and speed, and that means customers will enjoy a best-in-class 4G LTE personalized wireless experience,” he said. “C Spire 4G LTE gives customers and businesses more of what they want than ever before on the nation’s only personalized 4G LTE network.”

He points out that a 4G LTE network is only as good as the devices that accompany it – bringing the high-speed mobile broadband experience full circle. “C Spire has that covered as well with the introduction of several leading 4G LTE smartphones and connected devices with our new service launch,” he added.

AT&T also has some cool new devices that are LTE compatible, including 4G LTE smartphones and tablets. As for the faster response time, spokeswoman Sue Sperry says the LTE technology offers lower latency, or the processing time it takes to move data through a network, such as how long it takes to start downloading a web page or file once a request has been sent. “Lower latency helps to improve services like mobile gaming, two-way video calling and telemedicine,” she said. “Wireless spectrum is a finite resource, and LTE uses spectrum more efficiently than other technologies, creating more space to carry data traffic and services and to deliver a better network experience.”

The faster service has economic development possibilities too. “As we focus on bringing more economic development to our area, it is crucial that we have the technology that companies and individuals need to succeed,” said State Rep. Kevin McGee of Brandon.

Blake Wallace, executive director of the Hinds County Economic Development District, added, “Working together, our local legislative delegation is creating an environment that makes businesses want to expand and invest here in Mississippi.”

AT&T’s newest launch covers metro and suburban Jackson with 95 cell sites on LTE. This coverage will continue to expand in other state markets.

“We continue to see demand for mobile Internet skyrocket, and our 4G LTE network in Jackson responds to what customers want from their mobile experience – more, faster, on the best devices,” said Mayo Flynt, president, AT&T Mississippi. “AT&T’s focus to deliver the best possible mobile Internet experience goes beyond 4G to embrace additional connection technologies.”

C Spire Wireless currently has about 40 percent of the Mississippi population covered with the latest technology, according to Dave Miller, public relations manager. “Jackson is one of 31 Mississippi markets that will receive C Spire’s advanced 4G LTE services between now and the end of October,” he said. “An additional six markets will be added by the end of 2012 as part of the company’s multi-million-dollar investment. The markets cover 2,700 square miles, a population of 1.2 million and 364 cell sites.”

Hopkins and Miller agree that broadband is critical for economic development. “The potential is tremendous. Look at the history of our company. We started with rural phone service that big companies wouldn’t provide,” Miller said. “We’re applying that level of service as we continue to evolve, and customers will see LTE in small places as we get through this initial phase.”

He added that although consumers must have a 4G device to take advantage of the newest LTE technology, C Spire is rolling out a seamless transition offer for the new devices. “Smartphones being made today are faster and do much more. They’re designed specifically for 4G LTE,” he said. “All the things you do with your phone today will be faster for businesses and consumers, and it will be a big improvement for employees working out in the field.”
