Luther Munford, a veteran Jackson attorney who wrote the book on Mississippi appellate law, has joined Butler Snow as a member of the Ridgeland-based firm’s Appellate and Written Advocacy Practice Group.

Munford, previously of Phelps Dunbar, will “certainly strengthen our appellate team,” said Donald Clark Jr., Butler Snow chairman.

Munford is a 1976 graduate of the University of Virginia School of Law who earned undergraduate degrees from both Princeton and Oxford universities. His book “Mississippi Appellate Practice” is in its eighth printing. He is also the editor of The Appellate Advocate, a publication of the American Academy of Appellate Lawyers, an organization for which he previously served as president.

Munford began work at his new firm’s Ridgeland office this week. In addition to appellate and media litigation, he will focus on constitutional law, professional liability and product liability law.

While Munford is known widely among his peers throughout Mississippi and beyond, he is perhaps best known by non-lawyers for his three decades representing the Clarion-Ledger and other media outlets in First Amendment and libel cases. He also has a hand in writing handbooks on Mississippi open records and open meetings laws.

Among his many awards, Munford won 2012 recognition in the publication Best Lawyers as Mississippi’s “Lawyer of the Year” for First Amendment law.
