Dr. Greg Forbes of The Weather Channel has ranked his Top 10 tornado cities, and Jackson ranks second.
Three Alabama cities make up the rest of the top four, with Huntsville first, Birmingham third and Tuscaloosa fourth.
According to the Weather Channel’s website, Forbes based his information on tornado paths that came with 75 miles of a particular city between 1962 and 2011.
“The difference between this year’s list and the ones in the past is the past ones were just counting the sheer number of tornadoes,” Forbes said on his web site. “That didn’t take into consideration the track length or path width. Thus it didn’t count how big of an area was being affected by the tornadoes.”
According to the Jackson web page, total tracks in the Jackson area have covered 1,452.9 square miles, leaving it less than 70 square miles behind Huntsville at 1,520.2 square miles.
The rest of the rankings are 5. Little Rock, Ark.; 6. Tulsa, Okla.; 7. Oklahoma City; 8. Atlanta; 9. Wichita, Kan.; 10. Nashville, Tenn.
