Rooster’s holding food & music benefit Sunday for slain detective’s family

Rooster’s Restaurant in Fondren will hold a benefit Sunday for the family of late Jackson Police Detective Eric Smith, who was slain by a homicide suspect at police headquarters April 4.

The fundraising event will be Sunday from 11a.m. to 5 p.m. Nathan Glenn, owner of the restaurant at 2906 N. State St., says plates of food will be sold for $10 each with such options as pulled pork, red beans and rice and chicken tenders.

Blues musician Grady Champion will bring his band to Fondren for the event. State Street will be blocked from Fondren Place to Mitchell.

The goal of the fundraiser is to sell 1,000 plates at $10 each to raise $10,000. “We are absorbing all the food costs and our employees are working for free,” Glenn says. “Every cent we take in will go to Detective Smith’s widow.”

Glenn is urging local restaurants to volunteer food, time or energy. “This is an open invitation to do what you can do,” he says. “From sandwiches to salads to completed plates, we can use anything any restaurant is willing to bring.

“If restaurateurs or their employees want to come work, they can wear their shirts or their uniforms.”

Kathy Glenn is the contact person for volunteers. Call her at 601.966.4991 or email to offer food, labor, time or money.
