STONEVILLE, Mississippi — After a stormy regional conflict over Farm Bill debate in 2012, U.S. Senator Thad Cochran worked cooperatively with Chairwoman Debbie Stabenow (Michigan) to forge a compromise piece of farm legislation that garnered a 15-5 vote in the Senate Agriculture Committee today.
” (Tuesday) was one more example of Sen Cochran’s ability to create consensus, in the face of division among his Senate colleagues,” stated Delta Council President Bill Litton, the Leflore County agribusinessman.
The Committee-passed bill reflected Cochran’s efforts to bring more regional and crop-specific harmony among farm groups from the West Coast to the Mid-South and Southwest.
“Not only did Senator Cochran stand firm on his commitment to farm groups, but he also helped his Committee Chairwoman maintain a balanced approach to conservation and nutrition missions in this bill,” added Litton.
The Senate measure will now go to the full Senate for consideration, where it is certain to meet with many serious challenges, in terms of “unfriendly” amendments.
The House Agriculture Committee will begin their Farm Bill debate on Wednesday, when Chairman Frank Lucas and Ranking Member Colin Peterson introduce their bi-partisan Farm Bill proposal for consideration by the full House Committe
Both the Senate and House Committee bills should make it to floor action before the July 4, recess, according to Washington reports.
