Former brigadier general, state lawmaker Melancon dies at 68

BROOHAVEN — Steven L. Melancon, a retired brigadier general in the Mississippi Army National Guard and a former state lawmaker, has died at the age of 68.

Officials with Riverwood Family Funeral Service say Melancon died Friday at his home in Brookhaven. Services are 10 a.m. tomorrow at First United Methodist Church in Brookhaven.

He began his military service in 1965 when he enlisted in the U.S. Army and served two tours in Vietnam. He retired from the National Guard in 1996.

Melancon practiced law in Brookhaven and served in Mississippi House from 1980 to 1984.

In 2001, President George W. Bush appointed him as the Mississippi state director for the Selective Service System where he served until July 2013.

Survivors include his wife, Jan; a daughter, a son and four grandchildren.
