Weather continues to affect holiday plans; state could see flooding, snow

Mississippians are facing a very wet — and perhaps somewhat white — Thanksgiving as a large, active front moves through the state dumping heavy rain that could change over to wet snow later today.

The big problem right now is rain. Parts of Mississippi are under a flood watch through today.

The National Weather Service says up to five inches of rain are possible in central Mississippi late yesterday and today, combined with very cold temperatures. Highs today are expected in the lower 40s north and lower 50s in the south. The watch affects several areas from Natchez east to Columbus.

Meteorologists say the rain will switch to a rain-snow mix this evening that could end as snow late today and early tomorrow. The weather service says if any accumulation occurs it will do so on elevated and grassy surfaces.
