History by candlelight

An event next month will offer “ghosts” from the past and a unique view of one of the most important historical places in the state.

Vicksburg National Military Park will hold its Shadows of the Past candlelight walking tour on April 12.

The tour covers about a mile long stretch road around the former visitor center on Pemberton Avenue near the site of Confederate Lt. Gen. John C. Pemberton’s surrender to Union Maj. Gen. Ulysses S. Grant on July 4, 1863.

The event is free, but reservations are required. Each tour is limited to 30 visitors. The hour-long tours will begin at 7 p.m. and depart each 30 minutes until 9 p.m.

Two previous Shadows of the Past tours have focused on Vicksburg National Cemetery and the U.S.S. Cairo, which sunk in the Yazoo River about seven miles north of Vicksburg on Dec. 12, 1862.

The first Shadows of the Past tour was in 2011.
