GULFPORT — Maj. Gen. Augustus L. Collins, the adjutant general of Mississippi, will host a re-designation ceremony for the 209th Civil Engineer Squadron on Saturday in Gulfport.
The unit will now be called the 209th Special Operations Civil Engineer Squadron.
The 209th Civil Engineer Squadron began in 1969 with the activation and federal recognition of the 173d Civil Engineering Flight. Over the years, the squadron has had several domestic and overseas missions.
It responded to Hurricane Ivan and Hurricane Katrina and overseas operations in the Middle East and Afghanistan.
During the ceremony, the guidon, or flag, of the 209th Special Operations Civil Engineer Squadron will be unfurled, signifying their integration into the Special Operations family.
