JACKSON — Mississippi Attorney General Jim Hood said Thursday that he will decide soon whether to seek a fourth term this year.

Hood, 52, is the only Democrat in statewide office.

Responding Thursday to questions from The Associated Press, Hood said he will make a decision about his political plans in the next week or so.

Asked if he is considering a run for governor, Hood said: “I don’t know. I’m just going to have to wait and pray about it. I’ve got about another week or so before I have to do something.”

Candidates have until Feb. 27 to qualify to run for statewide, regional, legislative or county offices.

Republican Gov. Phil Bryant is seeking a second term this year. So far, no high-profile challenger has emerged for either Bryant or Hood.

Hood has been splitting his time between his Jackson office and a branch office he established in north Mississippi. In 2013, he moved his family from the Jackson area back to his hometown of Houston. Hood had said last summer that he was planning to seek re-election this year. He didn’t explain Thursday why he is uncertain about his plans for now.

State Democratic Party chairman Rickey Cole said in a separate interview Thursday that Hood generally makes his own decisions about seeking office, without seeking advice from a wide circle of people or party leaders.

“I support the attorney general in whatever decision he makes, as long as that decision keeps him in service to the people of Mississippi,” Cole said.
