Greenwood school board hires superintendent's wife

GREENWOOD — The Greenwood School Board has hired the superintendent’s wife as an instructional coach for the school district.

Superintendent Montrell Greene left the room Friday when board members voted 5-0 for the hiring of Robie Green, The Greenwood Commonwealth reported.

Robie Greene was previously an education professor at Mississippi Valley State University.

The school district said in a news release that it would be discriminatory to not consider someone for a job just because her husband is superintendent. The district said law and precedent allow someone other than the superintendent to recommend that the board hire a job candidate.

Robie Greene will be paid $26,000 for the rest of the year. The district said Robie Green is well qualified because she has earned advanced degrees and has worked as a teacher, administrator and school counselor.

She succeeds June Leigh, who was promoted this month be the school district’s director of curriculum and instruction. Leigh’s new job will pay $87,500.

June Leigh, who had held the job of instructional coach since November, is the wife of Deputy Superintendent Chester Leigh.

A former assistant superintendent for curriculum, Mary Brown, was fired by Montrell Greene in October. She is contesting the firing.
