William G. Jackson honored as Physician of the Year

William G. Jackson of Corinth, was honored as Mississippi’s Family Physician of the Year 2019 at the Mississippi Academy of Family Physicians Annual Meeting.

Also recognized were P. Brent Smith, MD, MSC, FAAFP, of Cleveland, New Physician of the Year, and Scott A. Carlton, MD, of Jackson, Academy of Family Physicians Military Award.

William M. Grantham of Brandon was 2019-2020 president of the Mississippi Academy of Family Physicians.

Jackson is a Fellow of the American Academy of Family Physicians who has practiced since 1976. He is affiliated with Magnolia Regional Health Center in Corinth. Jackson graduated from Walnut High School, Northeast Mississippi Community College and Mississippi State University before going on to the University of Mississippi School of Medicine.

Jackson is also a member of the Mississippi State Medical Association, past president of the Alcorn County Medical Club, and previously was Chief of Staff at Magnolia Regional Health Center.

Smith has been family physician at Family Medical Clinic in Cleveland since 2014. He is the team physician for both the Cleveland High School and Bayou Academy. Smith is Director of Acute Care at North Sunflower Medical Center in Ruleville, where he also serves as an emergency room physician. Smith earned a medical degree from the University of Mississippi School of Medicine and completed his residency in Family Medicine at the University of Mississippi Medical Center.

A native of Greenville, Carlton is a graduate of Greenville High School and Mississippi State University. He went on to complete his medical doctorate at the University of Mississippi Medical Center. Carlton completed an internship in family medicine at Martin Army Community Hospital in Fort Benning, Ga., and his residency in family medicine at Tripler Army Medical Center in Honolulu, Hawaii. While full-time in the military, he was stationed in Hanau, Germany, for several years where he worked as a physician.

In 1999, Dr. Carlton left the Army and settled into Family Practice Clinic in Columbia. In 2010, he again joined the Mississippi Army National Guard, where he is now a Colonel serving as a field surgeon during his weekend drills and during two deployments.

Grantham served as MAFP treasurer, vice president, and president-elect before his election as president. Grantham earned an undergraduate degree from the University of Southern Mississippi and went on to medical school at the University of Mississippi Medical Center. He went on to complete Family Medicine residency at the University of South Alabama, serving as chief resident. Grantham began his professional career in McComb at Southwest Family Medicine and Southwest Regional Medical Center before joining MEA Medical Clinic.

Grantham was president of the Mississippi State Medical Association in 2017-18. He is a Mississippi Hospital Association board member and chairs both the First Intermed Board of Directors and the Second Intermed Board of Directors. Grantham was president of Central Medical Society in 2007. He is a Mississippi Physicians Care Network board member and a member of the Mississippi Medicaid Advisory Committee.
