US consumer spending fell sharply in December

WASHINGTON • U.S. consumer spending tumbled 0.5 percent in December, the biggest decline in nine years, as the holiday shopping season ended in disappointment. WASHINGTON — Employers advertised more job openings in September but hiring was essentially unchanged. Job openings rose 2.8 percent to 5.53 million in September, up from 5.38 million in August, the Labor Department said Thursday. Hiring slipped to 5.05 million from 5.08 million the prior month. Rick Cleveland takes reins at Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame

Long-time, award winning sports journalist Rick Cleveland was named today as the new executive director of the Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame and Museum. AP hires Tillman

The Associated Press has named Laura Tillman as a legislative relief reporter in Mississippi. She holds a degree from Vassar College and worked as a reporter for the Brownsville Herald in Texas, covering politics, immigration, public safety and hurricanes among other assignments. Later, she launched a freelance writing career. Tillman’s assignment runs through the 2012 legislative session.
