Mississippi fighting national doctor shortage

With an aging and growing population, it’s estimated that nationally 30,000 physicians joining the workforce each year will not be enough to meet the increasing demand for care.

However, the outlook is not bleak for Mississippi regarding a shortage of physicians. Two medical schools graduating physicians and the state’s small population — the 35th most populous state — bode well for statewide coverage.
